Footedale VFD at Sunset
Good evening, everyone! Tonight's photo comes to you from the small community of Footedale in German Township, Fayette County, Pennsylvania. I had just wrapped up a client photo session near my old stomping grounds, and on the drive home I passed the fire station. As I drove by, I noticed a new (well, new to me at least) sign on display above the garage bays. Since I had all of camera gear with me, I decided to turn around and grab some new shots of a place that holds so many important memories in my life. As I was taking photos, those memories started flooding back... Responding to calls at 02:00 in the morning, Monday Night Bingos, equipment checks, department meetings, washing the fire trucks, training, Christmas parties, birthday parties, the food from the ladies' auxiliary kitchen, cash bashes, weddings, and yes, even the black wreaths and boots that donned the front of station as we remembered those those who had passed over the course of time.
I remember my Dad telling me stories of how this building used to be two stories tall. Many years ago, it served as a general store for the "coal patch" of Footedale. At that time, the general store carried everything from meats and groceries to clothing and other household supplies. I don't remember exactly, but I believe in 1948, it became the local fire station and continues to remain a staple in the community.
Thank you to all of the dedicated volunteers who answer the call and give so much of your time and talent to your local communities! Stay safe out there!
