The Kaufmann's Clock
Good evening, everyone! I hope you're all having a great start to your week! Tonight's photo comes to you from the corner of Smithfield Street and Fifth Avenue where the 'famous' Kaufmann's Clock is prominently displayed. Although the building is now occupied by Macy's, this was the former site of the Kaufmann's flagship department store in downtown Pittsburgh.
As I started researching more information about this clock, I was surprised to find out that this wasn't the original clock. From what I read, the original clock was installed in 1887, and featured a free-standing, four-sided design. The clock seen here was installed in 1913 just after a major building expansion at this location. I honestly never knew that and thought that this was the original clock for all these years.
